Elk vs Elk

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I went to a David Sedaris reading last Wednesday and it reminded me of, well, me. Me, a couple years ago when I too published my day to day happenings - on my old blog. Remember that? It's strange to rediscover things that I wrote 4 years ago. So many things that I'd forgotten happened, like this. or this. or when we went to see those short films at the Substation. or of course this perennial classic. (I started writing quite prolifically at one point, didn't I? But my favourite posts are the conversations. They feel more authentic, less consciously framed, more mimetic than diegetic, as Plato would say.)
Obviously what I wrote on that blog was a deliberate construction of my personality, various carefully selected facets, not my whole self. Tip of the iceberg. Still, I find myself surprised now at the person who wrote those things back then. I didn't think it was that long ago, but I guess it was, wasn't it?

  1. i dont remember ever reading those, but that just made my night. (although i am highly doubtful those are 100% accurate recollections of your conversations. i mean, they seem too well scripted. lol. that, or your family is a tv sitcom series waiting to be made. ala modern family.)

  2. Well, in defense of myself, I only wrote about the incidents worth writing about. 98% of what my family says isn't at all spectacular, but sometimes stuff came along that was begging to be immortalized in type.
That said, I think the cockroach incident took a lot longer than it seems in my post. I remember a lot of agonized standing around and swearing. But everything my father said in the other post really happened, 100% accurately.
