Last Monday, a friend and I went to watch this Argentinean film set in present-day Buenos Aires called Medianeras- a romantic-comedy about two people who are fated to find each other but take some time to do so. It takes place over three season: autumn, winter and then they finally meet in spring (ah, new beginnings!).

The film was a pretty accurate commentary on how people interact with each other these days, using technology and I found myself laughing quite a bit. The script wasn't consistent (at some bits the narration was a bit too much) and the plot reminded me of that Taiwanese show 'Turn Left, Turn Right'- but the actors and actresses managed to portray this sense of loneliness that everyone feels- loneliness that goes beyond conventional notions of romance but like that of just feeling very alone in our busy world.

We didn't know the director would be there and that there would be a Q&A session after the film; we didn't know that the actor playing the lead was a theatre star based in France and we also didn't know the actress was from Spain- we thought she was from Argentina (apparently she managed to get the accent right).
The acting aside, the film also paid homage to Woody Allen and him paying homage to cities- the director in this instance, showed the diversity and character of Bueno Aires by interjecting views about the city, its design, the buildings that stand side-by-side each other and he tried to reflect how the buildings were a mirror of the people who stayed in them. I was taken in by the architecture of Buenos Aires- it's a huge mosaic of buildings (old styled buildings just built beside postmodernist ones for no rhyme or reason) and I guess that's what gives Buenos Aires its eccentric character. It reminded me a lot of Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' and when he was asked if he was paying homage to Woody, the director said Woody was indeed an inspiration.
