I wanted to tell you guys about this amazing album that was never officially for sale. Dark Night of The Soul is a collaboration between David Lynch (director of deliciously atmospheric films like Mullholand Drive, and yes, Elephant Man) and a duo with the craziest names - Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse. The "album" features various artists from Julian Cassablancas of The Strokes, to Suzanne Vega, to Nina Persson of The Cardigans. Due to legality issues, Dark Night of The Soul was released as a blank CD with a hand-numbered, 100-page photo book composed by David Lynch himself. The blank CD was basically a sign to fans to "do with as you will", as the album tracks are only available online.
The music itself is breathtaking. The 13 tracks create a vast and diverse soundscape that offers many surprises. The music not always as moody as the title of the album suggests, with each track having its own charm with the artists involved really conveying emotions and atmosphere admirably. For me, the first song of the album (I posted it from youtube below) sucked me in upon first listen with its cutting lyrics and haunting instrumentals.
In short, Dark Night of The Soul in its entirety is a masterpiece for me, and its truly worth a listen. Enjoy!
So here's a taste of a Dark Night of The Soul, Revenge, featuring The Flaming Lips.
That's really nice. It sounds like Mercury Rev meets Stereophonics to me, no? I want to own this!
