a Metal Heart she doesn't have <3

Okay I understand this is slightly overdue, and some of you have been waiting for this in anticipation (hi Kelly). But yes, CAT POWER! First before I start I must say a little situation before the concert rather disrupted my ability to enjoy the concert for the first twenty minutes -

(before the show Jarren and I went to have dinner at Esplanade's Thai Express; and being the intelligent and responsible girl I always am I left my handphone at the restaurant and didn't realise till we were in the concert hall and the people didn't let us out to get it as the show was about to start - "The artiste has specified she would not like any movement in the hall for the first three songs." So Jarren, bless him, could only go out after that to get it. He came back soon enough, but because he had sprinted through an airconditioned place he started having a mini asthma attack upon returning and had to spend the next half an hour or so surpressing gasps and coughs. Moral of the story: I am a horrible human being.)

however, after that things were good! It wasn't mind blowing - honestly I think I might have psyched myself up a little too much. In the interest of keeping this entry cohesive I shall list out the downers and the awesomes:


Downers

1. Chan Marshall has this habit of improvising her songs to a narrower vocal range: as a result, after awhile things kinda start sounding the same.

2. She didn't interact with the audience at all (until the end, but that shall be left till alter cos its a huge Awesome point) . Instead, songs were performed almost non-stop: after one song, the pianist would do some chord transgressions and swiftly move into the next song.

Awesomes

1. Her voice is AMAZING live. So raw, so sensual, so soulful. Especially during the long notes - she would lift up her head and just BELT - and it really sounded like some heartfelt wail that just TOUCHED YOUR HEART.

2. SHE MOVES LIKE A CAT. The name is apt man. She has a way of slinking around the stage and tapping her feet and swaying her body in the most feline manner - and because of that you can tell she's that intimately connected with her music.

3. At one point in the concert she asked for the house lights to be turned on completely: she then performed a few songs with the lights on like that, and kept waving at all of us in the circle seats! SO CUTE.



4. SO YES HER CUTENESS. SHE IS SO CUTE. She kept putting her hand on her heart and curtsying to the audience in between songs. She was also really obsessed with the light effects - before one particular song she was like "Can we change the lights to blue please? And oooh is that a spotlight over there!" After which the technician dude turned it on and focused it on her. But here were the two big cute things:

Yknow how most vocalists bring out a plastic bottle of water onto the stage which they drink in between songs? Chan Marshall brought out a cup of tea in a teacup which she put on the floor like it was any old bottle. In between songs she would saunter over and pick it up carefully and take a sip; and when she did I could see the teabag label hanging out from the cup. HAHAHA.

Also, at the end of the last song, when the band was doing an instrumental, she disappeared for awhile. Then she came back with a MASSIVE bouquet of flowers and started personally giving it out to each member of the audience sitting in front. She probably had about a hundred flowers, and took a good deal of time doing that. So so sweet to watch.

As you can see I didn't get that many good pictures. But hopefully this suffices! Accompanying Jarren to Patrick Watson on Tuesday so that should be pretty spectacular. Then it's THE KILLERS ON SUNDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so living in poverty once concert season is over.
