Meet me in Montauk

or 'The Good Ones, Part 2': my favourite onscreen couples.

1) Joel//Clementine, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Isn't it weird that Jim Carrey, whom I can't stand in so many of his comedic roles, is half of my favourite movie couple of all time? Can't even begin to sum up this one; all the little details add up to something that feels so real and so... worth fighting for.

2) Jesse//Celine, Before Sunrise (& Before Sunset)
Perfect - smart, highly in-tune with each other, romantically cynical and/or cynically romantic, and so touchingly honest and open in a way that could only be possible over one night in Vienna with a stranger from a train.

3) Edward//Kim, Edward Scissorhands
"Hold me." "I can't!" And that incredibly beautiful snow scene, with Danny Elfman's best music ever.

4) Patrick//Kat, Ten Things I Hate About You
Love the repartee, the paintball date, the flashing-in-detention scene, all their awesome friends and, of course, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You". Also love the matching brown curly hair.

5) Romeo//Juliet, Romeo + Juliet
Angel wings + fish tank + best Claire Danes role ever + Young Leo + Venice Beach + The Cardigans

Many many runner ups: Scarlett Johansson & Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. Ralph Fiennes & Kristen Scott Thomas in The English Patient. Warren Beatty & Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde.
Keira Knightley & Matthew MacFayden in Pride and Prejudice (she's occasionally good for something). Joan Fontaine & Laurence Olivier in Rebecca. Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain. Patrick Fugit & Kate Hudson in Almost Famous. Ellen Page & Michael Cera in Juno. Simba & Nala in The Lion King (right?). Melanie Laurent & Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds (joking, joking. OK, enough).

This time I definitely missed out some good ones. It's hard to remember all! Try and think of some more (but not Zooey & Joseph. Of all the sickeningly cutesy couples ever conceived...).

  1. I love couple number one. Clementine sigh love her name- not completely related to the movie (at all) but I've been eating a lot of clementines lately. Easily peelable and oh so small and packed with Yum

  2. Hahah Shu you're so cute. I love Clementine (and the fruit) too. I don't think of her as 'a Kate Winslet character', I think of her as a separate human being.
