The Twenty Word Review of Shutter Island (and I don't want to ruin anyone's expectations. I succeeded in going roughly a year without seeing the trailer or reading anything about this movie, so I encourage skipping the following if you too want to go in absolutely tabula rasa):
"Wanted so badly to love this, but somewhere along the way it lost me. Elements all present; never added up."
Pity, really; this was a movie that seemed as far up my alley as... anything can go up an alley. Mystery/horror/psychological thriller/romantic noir-ish period piece? That's me! I'm not sure what exactly turned me off, really - screenplay? Editing? The continued impenetrability of Leo's acting (to me, anyway)? My TA says that the book is a lot better and more thematically complex; I can totally imagine that.
But hey, still worth watching, of course (as if you weren't going to); it is Scorsese after all. And god, how freakin' pretty. I mean look at that shit! If nothing else it was visually absolutely breathtaking. (Also, speaking of which, I don't think Mark Ruffalo the buffalo has ever looked better. Just putting it out there.)
