Most of you probably know that I have an unreasonably soft spot for Dire Straits, but I must say my favourite song, Romeo & Juliet, is one of the best songs of all time. I've loved it since forever and it's kinda amazing how I can still put it on loop and not get sick of it.
Anyway, for some weird reason I never actually looked the song up on Youtube before. Maybe it's cos I heard it first on my mother's CD, and just kept going back to that for all my Dire Strait fixes. But today I did, and bloody hell, I wish I didn't.
Presenting: THE WORST MUSIC VIDEO IN THE WORLD.
What's up the with walking?! The literal, literal, L-I-T-E-R-A-L interpretation?! The trip at 4:22?! Omg. I am mortified, disgusted and very very upset. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE ONE OF THE BEST LOVE SONGS IN THE WORLD. For like, 5 years this song was the pinnacle of musical perfection for me; despite the number of times I've listened to it there was always something new that could just grab me in the heart. And now thanks to this dumb video perfection has a BOIL of a pimple (sorry Des.)
Seriously, my heart is broken. Just kill me now.

AWWWWWWZARA!! i think it quite CUTE WHAT.
ReplyDeleteAhhh hahah I think the music video is quite cute too the way Romeo and Juliet sway their hips as they walk down the hall. And hahahah the VERY literal takes of the video
ReplyDeleteOH OH OH
ReplyDeleteDuring my Shakespeare class last term, this song was in my head FOR WEEKS, I SWEAR. Everytime someone brought up Romeo and Juliet my brain was like, "A LOVE-STRUCK ROMEO..."
So of course I went to watch it on youtube too. So I've seen that before. I played it til my roommates went crazy.
The worst part was NO ONE ELSE KNEW THE SONG. I even hummed it out for my class. What's America come to.
Also, I dunno. I've always kinda read this song as not serious - right? Kind of a parody of love songs? And likewise the video? I'm quite sure it's meant to be funny.
ReplyDeleteHow can it not?
NOOOOOOOO. Mark Knopfler wrote it after he broke up with the girl, Holly something, who was the lead of a band. He was ruined byt eh breakup and felt that she was only using him to get ahead. Not a parody of love songs, IT IS *THE* LOVE SONG. hahaha.
ReplyDeleteIn other news The Killers did a cover have you all heard it? I prefer the original though.
Hmm. I'm not thoroughly convinced. Haha I don't think the backstory proves anything! A lot of satirical things have been borne out of heartbreak.
