This is what I'm doing tonight and I'm excited and also somewhat terrified. For the uninitiated the Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult sci-fi-horror-musical-parody movie that, since 1974, has been running in theaters all over America. It stars Tim Curry - yes, Mr. Nigel Thornberry himself - as a evil scientist transvestite from transsexual Transylvania. Going to these screenings is a multi-sensory experience: the audience dresses up as characters from the movie, everyone sings and dances; they shout things after practically every line of dialogue; food is thrown at the screen; when it rains in the movie people cover their heads with newspaper.
It's pretty absurd shit. But it's also a national institution. A rite of passage. I'm a Rocky Horror virgin and I'm about to be deflowered (if it's your first time you have to wear a big red V and participate in some kind of virgin sacrificial ritual before the show - hence my nervousness). Wish me luck! and happy Halloween!
