5 SAG Awards Favourites

More Awards Coverage. It's not gonna stop anytime soon. I must say I am not pleased about this sudden King’s Speech monopolization of awards. All of a sudden it’s THE film of 2010, which is just wrong. Who? Who are these people voting for it? British people? There were many better movies out this year, damnit – The Fighter. The Kids are All Right. Winter’s Bone. Black Swan. And so on. Not to even mention Social Network.

Anyway. Moving on from that, here were my plusses of the SAG Awards last night. And when I say plusses, I don't really mean their outfits (re. the dudes at least). I mean more of the fact that they were there. More of the fact that they
exist, if you will.

1. C-BALE
Christian Bale was looking good with short hair on his birthday (although I wouldn't mind seeing the furry animal on his face die). The persona he’s been working recently is this cheerful-working-class-British-family-man, which I’ve never really seen from him before, but since it’s winning him the awards he can keep it up.

2. J-JONES
PERFECTION. PERFECTION. PERFECTION.
Sorry, I just love this woman. My obsession is purely with her surface, because who knows what goes on beneath (she’s so mysteriously BLANK all the time) but what a surface. It's too bad Boardwalk Empire is steamrolling all over poor Mad Men right now despite MM's Season 4 being so mindblowingly awesome.

3. M-KUNZ
A lot more interesting than Natalie Portman these days, no? And what a lovely dress.

4. H-BON-CAR.
Thought she looked really pretty tonight; her beauty is so often overshadowed by the kooky. Why doesn’t TIM ever accompany her to these things though? I’m sure she accompanies HIM.

5. THE ANNETTE BENING POSSE
I am very jealous of Annette Bening – she gets to hang out at all these things with two of the coolest men in the world, husband Warren Beatty and co-star Mark Ruffalo.

M-Ruff now//W-Beatz then (I have been waiting for an excuse to post this picture for a long time). Both adorable.

  2. Oh I forgot it was CNY! Same to you WP!
Kings Speech you don't have to watch right now. I think you pretty much know mostly what it is already. What you think it's gonna be = yes.
    BUT YES, I LOVE TKAAR.

  3. Does that mean King's Speech is good, or just predictable??

  4. Well, I mean it's everything you expect in the classic "Oscar movie". The movie that in a way seems to be made for the precise purpose of winning awards from the famously conservative Academy... versus perhaps more innovative, original and daring movies like Black Swan and Social Network.
Speaking of which I just saw a rather entertaining article about the nuances of facial expression in Sosh Net. http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/?p=12186
I love living in a world where it's entirely possible to read such novel and quirky pieces as that every day.

  6. Yeah, I can't say I really LOVED Sosh Net myself (dare I say that right now it's my least favourite David Fincher movie besides Benjamin Button??), so you probably have to go read some of the million articles written about it in the past few months to get a better idea, but you have to admit it was really well-made. On my part I appreciated how the scenes were set up like everybody trying to tell their own version of the events at the same time. And there's no such thing as the objective truth... kind of like a certain popular website I don't use.

Then again King's Speech is very well-made too, and it's got a great backstory (writer was a stutterer himself, tried to get this movie made for decades, the Queen Mum wouldn't let him in her lifetime so they had to wait for her to die...).

So whatever. Whichever wins it's not gonna be my personal top 5 which were Another Year, Winter's Bone, Kids, Fighter and Black "Istillhaven'tseenBlueValentineyetargh" Swan.

Hahah wow, long answer. See what happens when you get me started?
