Snow /Globes

Hullo everybody! I just got back from a shotgun snowboarding weekend trip with Veronica and friends. She called me on Thursday, we were on Big Bear Mountain on Friday, I pretty much shattered my ass trying to snowboard on Saturday, and here I am now back in my room on Sunday night. It’s like 24 degrees Celsius down here in LA, but 8 hours ago I was stomping through snow and taking pictures of icicles hanging from pine trees. Isn’t California great?

Anyway - yay! January! Awards Season! One of my favourite times of the year! Golden Globes are always super fun to watch because they invite everyone but the actual awards themselves are pretty arbitrary (omg everyone around me here keeps thinking the Globes and the Oscars are synonymous.
Not the same thing. Key: Oscars = pretty legit. Globes = pretty bullshit). So basically everyone’s relaxed, moderately intoxicated and chilling in random celebrity collectives at their tables. I love seeing strange combinations of famous people talking to each other and wondering how they know each other. Especially when it’s a nice year like this year when a lot of people I am partial to are somehow involved (Bale, Guy Pearce, Natalie*, Michelle Williams, JGL, Depp+HBC, Mad Men-ners**, etc) and even some people who are not involved at all but are still inexplicably there (ScarJo, Alicia Keys).

This year’s Globes were really good, I thought. I am especially happy that
The Kids Are All Right won Best Comedy (although looking at its appalling competitors, it couldn’t not). With the caveat that I still haven’t seen The Fighter (tomorrow!!!), Blue Valentine, Kings Speech, etc, Kids is my favourite 2010 movie. I keep thinking that just to be on the set every day must have been amazing –imagine the conversations that cast had during breaks, because their onscreen chemistry was wonderful. Many things to love – Julianne Moore’s adorable line readings (“Hey, don’t be a zoomer!”), Mia Wasikowska’s vulnerable resolve in the final shot of her at college (see picture), Mark Ruffalo’s hilarious facial expressions (there’s something so disarming and twinkly-eyed about that dude; you always feel like you’re privy to some inside joke), the sheer believability of Annette Bening’s performance, and the spot-on ending with its warmth and good humour and bittersweetness. So I’m happy. Now let's take the Oscars, kids.

*Actually wait, no. I am so sick of the whole world's undying love for her. I saw her in Westwood on Tuesday for the No Strings Attached premiere and if I'd heard one more person chant "sheee'ssssss sooooooo preeeeeeettttyyyyy" in my ear I would've shot them.

**People on NBC are bashing January Jones (some of them don’t even know who she is – “the other one”, this man just said) but I thought she looked awesome. She can push boundaries because she's a freaking Norse goddess. If not her, then who?? NBC are retards.

  1. I'm happy The Social Network won all the major awards! Inception really walked away empty handed- and Bale won an award for the fighter!! EXCITING! The Kids winning a Globe makes me want to watch it SOON. And I have always liked Mark Ruffalo- he does look a littttle goofy but he's also got this charming thing about him and he is handsome in his own Ruffalo way. I shall scrutinize the red carpet fashion tonight after I'm done for the day. Hope you enjoyed snowboarding Kelly!

  2. The Kids Are All Right! And wow Social Network won so many awards, and Inception none.

Yea man I kinda agree about Natalie Portman. I think her charm's dying down... I'm still gonna see No Strings Attached Though. And when is Black Swan EVER coming to Singapore?!!

I liked January Jones' dress, though a bit too revealing for my liking. She was hot.

AND SNOWBOARDING? I've always just WATCHED them while I'm on skis! Never went about trying to snowboard cos it looks like a lot more falling down!

  3. Rachel: It WAS a lot of falling down. I was down more than I was up. In fact I was almost never up. It was all down, baby. I'm still really hurting.

Shu: I think the whole world is half in love with Mark Ruffalo and they don't even know it. But seriously, the applause last night when they said his name..! He's the man.

Everyone: Someone pointed out that Scarlett's boobs have disappeared and holy shit, they have! Why, Scarlett? Why?
