For our very first gig for the year, we headed to the famous Jazz Cafe at Camden to catch the lovely and impeccable Sarah Blasko live for 'a strict 45 minute' set (I quote Blasko) and she sang songs from the two albums that she has under her hat so far. The opening act was Sophie Barker( who according to Joel, looked like a druggie, but Hui Min and I agree that she was just ... older looking. Her voice is amazing though) and after another half an hour of waiting, Blasko and her band showed up on stage. Her whole band was dressed in black except for her- her outift couldn't have been more vintage/Victorian and she looked like she was a petite version of Mary Poppins.
She opened with 'Hold On To My Heart' and there was a good mix of sad and upbeat songs in her setlist. I was so thrilled to hear her sing 'We Won't Run' (in which she did running motions to keep herself in tempo), 'Over & Over', 'I Never Knew' and she closed the show with 'All I Want'.
She chatted with the sold-out crowd about her trip to India and how seeing the Taj Mahal made her life complete. And how she's going to start writing her third album this week! Great Sarah Blasko inspiration will come our way again soon, soon. And she's way beyond 'HMV's Next Big Thing' (her gig came under that heading)- she's already such a big thing Down Under. Now it's time for her to conquer the world in her own sweet way.
