Letdown
Why would a man be picky enough to turn down Schindler's List, The English Patient, Lord of the Rings (and Aragorn at that), Philadelphia, etc, and yet willingly choose to do this movie? Or was it just an excuse to wear lovely suits and gad around Italy and be around pretty girls all day*? (OK, I guess when you put it like that...) Anyway - Daniel! Quit fooling around. You're getting too old for this. Go make some good movies and make 'em quick.
"Day-Lewis studied Italian for his role and frequently spoke the language in and out of character. According to music supervisor Matt Sullivan, "One day during shooting at London's Shepperton Studios, Rob and I got called into Daniel's dressing room, which was designed as a 1960s film director's office,' says Sullivan. 'He's smoking a cigarette, in full outfit and in character, and he's telling us how he would like to see this number that he's performing. And he's talking to us as Guido Contini. It was a really surreal experience.' "
Yeah, yeah, nice, but a bit of a waste of effort, no?
*Pretty girls and Kate Hudson. Blech.

ReplyDelete):
ReplyDeleteUGH I just watched it this weekend. Left severely disappointed and resenting having wasted soooo much time watching Guido Contini decide what to do with his life.
ReplyDeleteI guess it was still reasonably watchable (well I mean DDL is in it, what can I say). But it achieved neither 'CLEVER&DEEP' nor 'LIGHTHEARTED&FUN', which were the two things I was kinda hoping for.
ReplyDeleteVanessa: Hah! I just wrote a long rant about Nine in the letter which I'm ON THE BRINK of sending you I PROMISE. `
